HC boost for BJP government in Karnataka : News updates

Fri, Oct 29 03:27 PM
Bangalore, Oct 29 (PTI) In a major boost for the BJP government in the state, a third judge in the Karnataka High Court today upheld the disqualification of 11 rebel BJP MLAs, concurring with the decision of the Chief Justice. Justice V G Sabhahit, to whom the division bench headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar had referred the matter, upheld Speaker K G Bopaiah''s order disqualifying the dissident MLAs.
The Speaker''s order of disqualification was in accordance with Para 2 (1) (a) of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution--anti-defection law, observed Justice Sabhahit, who has concurred with the ruling given by the Chief Justice earlier. The division bench, which also consists of Justice N Kumar, had earlier given a split verdict with Justice Kumar setting aside the Speaker''s order.
The bench had then referred the matter to the third judge. Justice Sabhahit today placed his order before the division bench for delivering its formal orders.
Today''s order of the court comes as a major victory for the BJP, which has been plagued by dissidence and scraped through a confidence vote in the Assembly on Oct 14 after 16 disqualified MLAs were kept out of the Assembly. BJP counsel Satya Pal Jain hailed the third judge''s order saying this gave a good signal to defectors.
But the JD(S), which has spearheaded the dissidence in BJP by taking its MLAs out of the state before the confidence vote, reacted saying "it is only an intermediate state. We are going to knock at the doors of the Supreme Court and hope the issue will be decided in our favour.
" The case of disqualification of other 5 Independent MLAs, who have also challenged the Speaker''s action, will come up for hearing on Nov 2. The ruling BJP and Opposition Congress-JDS combine have been waiting for the verdict, which has an impact on the party position in the Assembly and the stability of the first saffron government in the south headed by B S Yeddyurappa.
The court on October 21 had declined the plea by five Independents, who also have been disqualified, to allow them to vote during the second motion of confidence moved by Yeddyurappa on October 22 or their votes be kept in a sealed cover till the court decides on their petition. However, the court had then declared that the result of the second floor test would be subject to its final order on the petition by Independent MLAs.
In the first confidence vote on Oct 11, the government won a controversial vote by a voice vote in the midst of pandemonium. The Speaker had disqualified the MLAs on the eve of the first vote.
Governor H R Bhardwaj refused to accept the result of the first trust vote and called for a second vote on October 14, which Yeddyurappa won by a 106-100 margin.

High Blood Pressure: Things You Can Do to Help

High Blood Pressure: Things You Can Do to Help Lower Yours

What is high blood pressure?

Arteries are like hoses that carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. If you put a crimp in a hose, pressure builds up inside it. High blood pressure (also called hypertension) occurs when your blood moves through your arteries at a higher pressure than normal.

What do the numbers mean?

Blood pressure is really two measurements, separated by a slash when written, such as 120/80. You may also hear someone say a blood pressure is "120 over 80."

The first number is the systolic blood pressure. This is the peak blood pressure when your heart is squeezing blood out. The second number is the diastolic blood pressure. It's the pressure when your heart is filling with blood--relaxing between beats.

A normal blood pressure is less than 120/80. High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. If your blood pressure is between 120/80 and 140/90, you have what is called "prehypertension," which means that if you don’t take important steps, your blood pressure can turn into high blood pressure.

How is high blood pressure diagnosed?

Blood pressure is measured by placing a blood pressure cuff around your arm, inflating the cuff and listening for the flow of blood. Your doctor will measure your blood pressure at more than one visit to see if you have high blood pressure.

How often should I have my blood pressure checked?

After age 18, have your blood pressure checked at least once every 2 years. Do it more often if you have had high blood pressure in the past.

What problems does high blood pressure cause?

Both high blood pressure and prehypertension damage your blood vessels. This in turn raises your risk of stroke, kidney failure, heart disease and heart attack.

Does it have any symptoms?

Not usually. This is why it's so important to have your blood pressure checked regularly.

How is it treated?

Treatment begins with changes you can make to your lifestyle to help lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease (see the box below). If these changes don't work, you may also need to take medicine.

Even if you need to take medicine, making some changes in your lifestyle can help reduce the amount of medicine you must take.
Lifestyle changes
·                             Don't smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco product.
·                             Lose weight if you're overweight.
·                             Exercise regularly.
·                             Eat a healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables and is low in fat.
·                             Limit your sodium, alcohol and caffeine intake.
·                             Try relaxation techniques or biofeedback.

How do tobacco products affect blood pressure?

The nicotine in cigarettes and other tobacco products causes your blood vessels to constrict and your heart to beat faster, which temporarily raises your blood pressure. If you quit smoking or using other tobacco products, you can significantly lower your risk of heart disease and heart

What about losing weight and exercising?

If you're overweight, losing weight usually helps lower blood pressure. Regular exercise is a good way to lose weight. It also seems to lower high blood pressure by itself.

Is sodium really off limits?

Not everyone is affected by sodium, but sodium can increase blood pressure in some people. Most Americans with healthy blood pressure should limit the sodium in their diet to 2,300 mg per day. African Americans, older Americans and people with high blood pressure should limit the sodium in their diet to 1,500 mg per day. Your doctor may tell you to limit your sodium even more.

Don't add salt to your food. Check food labels for sodium. While some foods obviously have a lot of sodium, such as potato chips, you may not realize how much sodium is in food like bread, canned vegetables, soups and cheese. Also be aware that some medicines contain sodium.

Do I need to quit drinking alcohol altogether?

In some people, alcohol causes blood pressure to rise quite a lot. In other people, it doesn't. If you drink alcohol, limit it to no more than 1 drink per day for women or 2 drinks per day for men. One drink is a can of beer, a glass of wine (4-5 oz.), or 1 shot (jigger) of liquor. If your blood pressure increases with alcohol, it's best not to drink any alcohol.

Does stress affect my blood pressure?

Stress may affect blood pressure. To help combat the effects of stress, try relaxation techniques or biofeedback. These things work best when used at least once a day. Ask your family doctor for advice.

What about medicine?

Many different types of medicine can be used to treat high blood pressure (see the box below). These are called antihypertensive medicines.

The goal of treatment is to reduce your blood pressure to normal levels with medicine that's easy to take and has few, if any, side effects. This goal can almost always be met.

If your blood pressure can only be controlled with medicine, you'll need to take the medicine for the rest of your life. You may need to take more than one medicine to help control your blood pressure. Don't stop taking the medicine without talking with your family doctor or you may increase your risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

Health Tips : Do you know?

Do you know?

Try the Stealth Health Approach
Tempted to give "Stealth Health" a try? Katz recommends picking any three of the following 12 changes and incorporating them into your life for four days. When you feel comfortable with those changes, pick three others. Once you have incorporated all changes, the difference would start showing within a couple of weeks, he says.
To Improve Nutrition:

1.     Buy whole foods—whether canned, frozen, or fresh from the farm—and use them in place of processed foods whenever possible.

2.     Reject foods and drinks made with corn syrup—a calorie-dense, nutritionally empty sweetener that many believe is worse for the body than sugar, says Katz.

3.     Start each dinner with a mixed green salad. Not only will it help reduce your appetite for more caloric foods, but it also will automatically add veggies to your meal.

To Improve Physical Fitness:

1.     Squat every time you pick something up. Instead of bending over in the usual way, which stresses the lower back, bend your knees and squat. This forces you to use your leg muscles and will build strength.

2.     Every time you stop at a traffic light (or the bus does), tighten your thighs and butt muscles and release as many times as you can. (Don't worry, no one will see it!) This will firm leg and buttock muscles, improve blood flow—and keep you mildly amused!

3.     Whenever you are standing in a line, lift one foot a half-inch off the ground. The extra stress on your opposite foot, ankle, calf and thigh, your buttocks, will help firm and tone muscles. Switch feet every few minutes.

To Improve Stress Control:

1.     Give your partner a hug every day before he/she leaves for work. Studies show this simple act can help one remain calm when chaos ensues during your day, Katz says.

2.     Have a good cry. It can boost your immune system, reduce levels of stress hormones, eliminate depression, and help you think more clearly.

3.     Twice a day, breathe deeply for three to five minutes.

To Improve Sleep:

1.     Sprinkle just-washed sheets and pillowcases with lavender water. The scent has been shown in studies to promote relaxation, which can lead to better sleep.

2.     Buy a new pillow. Katz says that studies show that pillows with an indent in the center can enhance sleep quality and reduce neck pain. Also, try a "cool" pillow—one containing either all-natural fibers or a combination of sodium sulfate and ceramic fibers that help keep your head cool.

3.     Eat a handful of walnuts before bed. You will be giving yourself a boost of fiber and essential fatty acids along with the amino acid tryptophan—a natural sleep-inducer.

Do give it a try!

Keep Your Computer Up-to-Date

Keep Your Computer Up-to-Date

In 1982, the computer was voted Time magazine’s person of the year, a smart move on the part of Time editors who had the foresight to predict its future.

A poll that appeared in a January 1983 issue of the magazine showed that even back then, Americans believed computers would become as common as TV sets in the home, and that “the computer revolution will ultimately raise production and therefore living standards.” Not bad.

Little did they know that by 2008, 1 billion PCs would be installed around the world, and per Gartner Inc. statistics, this number is expected to double by 2014. It’s unlikely, however, that when the first personal computers were created, inventors envisaged that computers would become so advanced that the average user would feel the need to either purchase a new computer every 4 years or repeatedly upgrade and update their existing one.

The need to upgradeAs computers evolve, users seem to spend more time upgrading their systems than they did years ago. According to our resident tech expert, “Sam,” who wishes to remain anonymous because of his job, “More time is needed to tune up computers today because operating systems are more complex. Here are the differences:

Windows 95: 15 million lines of code
Windows 98: 18 million lines of code
Windows XP: 35 million lines of code
Windows Vista: 50 million lines of code

“It goes to show that as technology progresses and users are asking/receiving more features, the OS is becoming more complex,” Sam says.

How to keep your computer up-to-dateMost users upgrade their systems when they have slowed down to a crawl and their hard drives are cluttered with files and downloads. But tech experts recommend that if you’re not interested in trading in your computer for a new one just yet, it’s best to keep it running fast and smoothly by updating it.

Speed up your computer: Over time and daily use, your computer will eventually slow down if you ‘fill up’ the hard drive with excessive files and downloads or if your system has been infected with malware. One of the easiest ways to speed up your computer is to run programs which fix system errors and help make your PC run like new. This, helps your hard drive run faster by rearranging data to remove fragments.

Defrag the hard drive: Tech expert Sam recommends users defrag their hard drives every month. With everyday use, files become scattered on the drive. Defragging lines up and organizes these files in order so that your computer can access them more efficiently and quickly.

Add RAM: If you’re getting messages on your computer that your system is low on memory, it’s time to add more RAM (or Random Access Memory). This memory is necessary for your computer to perform its various functions. According to PCStats.com, “RAM provides a pallet that the computer can work from in normal operation, similar to our short-term memory. It holds information that is essential now but may or may not be transferred to long-term memory, depending on need.” Adding more RAM can be a complicated procedure for some, so it's best to refer to a computer technician.

Automatic updates: Tech experts recommend using Windows' automatic updates to patch security and application issues. These enhance your computer’s performance and security and help keep it up to date.

Avoid clutter: If you are a download junkie or online hoarder, your hard drive is probably filled to the brim and ready to burst, which slows your computer down. Delete unwanted folders and files, and run a program like "Computer Check up"  which can clean up clutter and improve PC performance by cleaning and repairing registries that are rife with errors and system glitches.

Weighing the costsAccording to Sam, “Adding more RAM or even getting a larger hard drive will help improve a user's computer, but with limits. If a user has a 32-bit computer (which a user can find out on the Web by getting hardware specs on their particular model), the RAM limit is 4 gigabytes, which may sound like a lot but in 2010, it really is not. Adding more memory to a 32-bit system will buy some time, but the money will be better spent in investing in a new 64-bit computer, which supports 256 terabytes (256 gigabytes x 1000) of RAM. If the computer is more than 3 years old, perhaps it's time to start considering a new computer.”

If you're using your computer simply for Facebook, email, Flash-based games and the like, a PC upgrade probably isn't necessary unless a hardware problem occurs. But if you're running a home business or using multiple programs at once, perhaps a new machine would be more practical.

Four Simple Ways to Relax The Body & Mind

Life is tough. It doesn't matter who you are or what you do, we all have to face many difficult and stressful situations. Being at the effect of life can leave us feeling stressed, worried, angry, confused and frustrated.
And the way we feel affects everything in our lives. When we feel bad, everything seems much worse than it is. A bad mood is like a filter that prevents us from seeing the positive things in life. Every little thing seems like another irritation.
If that's something you can relate to -- take heart -- we all know what it's like to feel stressed and frustrated. The important thing is to have the tools to recover quickly and naturally, find yourself again, and get back on track.
Here are four tips to help you relax the body and mind:
1. TAKE A BREAK
When things are starting to get out of hand and you can feel yourself reaching threshold, STOP. Finish what you're doing. Take a break before you start anything new.
If someone is driving you mad, make an excuse and leave the room! Go and take a walk. Get some fresh air, find some calm within and then prepare yourself to get stuck in again!
2. LISTEN TO RELAXING MUSIC
Music can have a powerful effect on your state. I'm sure there have been times when you heard a piece of music and suddenly you felt great. We all know songs that make you tap your foot or remind you of being in love.
Create a collection of music to help you relax and feel good. Make a tape of those songs that make you smile to help you unwind. Play it as often as you can...when you're at home, when you're working, when you're in your car. You'll be surprised how good you'll begin to feel.
3. AVOID STIMULANTS
Tea, coffee, fizzy drinks and chocolate all contain caffeine. Over the course of the day, this can add to your stress level considerably.
Why not prepare yourself a healthy alternative? Bottled water, freshly squeezed fruit juice and herbal teas are excellent for maintaining your body's natural water balance and helping you keep cool under pressure.
4. USE A SOOTHING VOICE
Use a relaxed and soothing tone of voice, not just out loud, but also when you talk to yourself. A soft, low, melodious tone opens up the relaxation circuits in your mind and helps you stay calm even in heated situations.
A friend of mine once told me "Life is a struggle. But once you accept that, it becomes a lot easier."
We can learn to deal with life's challenges by setting aside some time to go to work on ourselves, developing a state of acceptance. When we can learn to calm our minds and separate ourselves from our problems, we are on the road to significant improvement

Five Techniques to Relax and Focus Your Mind

Five Techniques to Relax and Focus Your Mind
Technique One:  Breathe Slowly.
Begin by inhaling a deep breath through your nose and as you slowly exhale through your mouth, mentally repeating the word “relax.” Repeat these three or four times. You can say the word, “relax” out loud at first, but then practice silently repeating the word, like a mantra.  Next focus your awareness on what has captured your attention.  What are you thinking or worrying about?  Is your mind in the past or the future?  Are you thinking about someone in particular?  Explore what has captured your attention and then repeat the breathing exercise above to release it with your exhale.

Tip: You can visualize that as you exhale, you are breathing out the thoughts and feelings from your mind through your mouth, like bubbles floating off into the distance
Technique Two:  Write
This exercise will help you gain clarity and perspective. Find some paper and write down your thoughts. This will help you slow down your thinking and release what’s “on your mind”.    As you write, remind yourself… “I have these thoughts… I am not my thoughts; I have these feelings… I am not my feelings.”  Let the words flow out of you and write them down without editing or being concerned with grammar or spelling.

To clear your consciousness fast express in writing what’s on your mind. Then take these papers and destroy them. Tear them up and throw them away, flush them down the toilet or burn them. You want to destroy the writing with gusto and intensity. Mentally tell yourself, “I am letting go of these thoughts and feelings. I am freeing my mind.”  This technique is great for insomnia, on restless nights, like I described above.

Tip: An important fact, you can not write as fast as you can think, so when you write down your thoughts you will slow down your thinking automatically. This is one of the benefits of journaling and why it is considered a meditative experience. It slows your mind down and focuses your attention quickly.
Technique Three: Hum.
Take a few moments and hum the lyrics of a favorite song.  Concentrate on remembering the lyrics and feel the vibration of humming in your throat, face and chest. This will benefit you two ways: 1. Concentration and remembering the song will focus your mind. 2. The vibration of humming will ground you into the sensation of your physical body. It is a great technique and you can do it anywhere at anytime.  After just a few minutes you’ll feel a difference.
Technique Four:  Visualize.
Follow this simple guided meditation. Close your eyes.  Breathe deeply three times and mentally (silently) say the word “relax.” Imagine a “basketball size” sphere of white light hovering about twelve inches above your head. Focus your mind to visualize the minutest detail. Imagine that you see it and feel the warmth radiating down on the top of your head. Next imagine this sphere slowly lowering and touching the crown of your head.

Take another deep breath and bring the sphere down around your head, like a helmet. Imagine that your head is filled with white light. If you were to open your eyes, the light would stream out from inside of you.  Imagine the light dissolving these scattered thoughts.
Focus on the light, feel its warmth and sense it filling your mind with peace and comfort. Breathe naturally for a few minutes.  When you are ready, simply open your eyes and go back to your activities. This is great for a quick focus before an important meeting.  You can do this in a parked car, at your desk or in a bathroom stall.
Technique Five: Be Sensual.
Focus your attention on your five senses. This provides a mental boundary to contain your scattered mind. Being sensual simply means to be aware of your five senses. Smell the air, feel the temperature on your skin, listen to the sounds around you and taste the food that you eat.  Being sensual brings you into the present fast and effectively.
You now have five easy ways to focus your mind and harness its power. Your mind will help you make more trustworthy decisions throughout your day and you’ll experience overall greater inner peace.
These techniques will offer fast and temporary relief of a scattered mind.  For a more in-depth method that will help you heal more permanently from a scattered mind and keep you centered, I recommend that you learn to meditate.  If not from me, then from someone else you know and trust.  I don’t recommend books on meditation, because they can only describe the process.  Classes and weekend courses are great, but very time consuming and expensive.
My guided meditations are especially geared to help you experience meditation, in the privacy of your home without spending a fortune and you can be guided into meditation anytime you desire with a CD.

Bangalore's Couples! You're being watched!

Roaming through Garuda Mall yesterday with my sis and bro-in-law, I couldn't help but notice so many couples walking around as usual. Hmmmm... .... ... ...(no! that was not a sigh due to the fact I'm single,) in fact, I made up my mind on the spot to categorize the various types of cupid-struck couples that i saw. Here's what i came up with -->
1. The most common type - The "sensible" type -> Here's my fav kind actually. They are the pairs that walk around with hands tightly clasped together, laughing and having a good time. They are totally free and are out on care-free date! dats it! Hmm..love it!
2. The next type - I'd call them the "break-up-any-minute" type. Though they walk together, their hearts are as far apart as the North and South poles. Their faces are always in opposite directions, scanning every 'opposite-sexed' human walking by. Hahaa..really funny to watch them, its like their faces throw out an SOS cry - Save me from this guy/gal!! lol.
3. The 3rd type - The "quiet lovey-dovey" type. They're just lost in a world of their own, floating i guess on love-skates instead of actually walking. Man! U could get a complex just watchin them. Most of them are in the 'shoulder-waist' lock where the guy's arm is around the girl's shoulder and the girl's arm is locked around his waist. Very romantic dude. My type? I'm not so sure about that.
4. The "We wanna show the www (whole-wide-world) that we're in love" type. Hahahaaa...makes me laugh just sayin it! They do everything possible to show to everyone standing in a 150-m radius around them, that they're crazzy bout each other! Ok Ok..we get the picture... no no nooo!! There's just no stopping them! a few words that are heard by eavesdroppers who just can't help but overhear cos these ppl just wanna be heard--my sweetie-pie, my honeycombs, my darling, my sugar, my sugar-candy, my sugar-coated bun, my knight, my princess,.....makes me wanna say my Lord - Save me!
5. The "super-dependant female" type. Weird. Yet Funny. The guy walks around with a pompous self-satisfied look on his face. The gal is clinging on to the guy as if to say "If i let go of you, I'll dis-integrate into a million sub-atomic particles!!" Hehehe....very funny i must say. Makes the guy feel all bloated up. Or does the girl do this on purpose. Hmm..I wonder.
Well, that's that. 5 broad categories. I think it could still be divided further based on looks, clothing, etc ;-) but that's not needed right? Enuff is Enuff. Say what we may, but we defintely can't avoid them.

Bangalore's couples.

Plenty of food for thought.

What is Politics??? : Joke

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, 'What is Politics?' Dad says, 'Well son, let me try to explain it this way

I am the head of the family, so call me The President.

Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her the Government.

We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you the People.

The nanny, we will consider her the Working Class.

And your baby brother, we will call him the Future.

Now think about that and see if it makes sense.'

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said.

Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him .

He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper.

So the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room.

Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny.

He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy says to his father,

'Dad, I think I understand and the concept of politics now. '

The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.'

The little boy replies, 'The President is screwing the Working Class

while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the Future is in deep shit.
